The Bar Method Weekend Schedule

The Bar Method reminds its patrons that there are two major events at Liberty Station this weekend. Please allow extra time to get to the 8:30 am and 9:35 am classes this Saturday, May 30, due to the Arthritis Foundation walk at Liberty Station. Streets around The Bar Method may have limited access. Park in the lot behind the studio or follow traffic signs into the Ace Hardware lot. The Bar Method will be closed on Sunday, May 31 due to street closures from the Rock n’ Roll Marathon. Good luck to anyone participating!

Live Music in the Courtyard at Liberty Station Marketplace

Come out to Liberty Station Marketplace on Friday June 5 for two live music performances! First is Bob Giesick, a fingerstyle guitarist on Friday, June 5, 2009, from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the main courtyard between Panera Bread & Bakery and Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, located on Truxtun Road between Womble and Roosevelt Streets in Point Loma. Bob Giesick is a Fingerstyle Guitarist who plays regularly in coffee houses, lounges and private parties all over San Diego. His folksy and friendly entertainment style is welcomed by all and his original compositions complements the large repertoire of favorite guitar tunes loved over the years.

 Kevin Rones, a fingerstyle and harpguitarist will play on Friday, June 5, 2009 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the main courtyard between Panera Bread & Bakery and Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, located on Truxtun Road between Womble and Roosevelt Streets in Point Loma. Kevin Rones, a.k.a. SDWS Stylin’ Wild Child Workshop with Chuck McPherson

The San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) presents a four-day workshop with Chuck McPherson. The workshop will invite you to trust your individual ability that prompted you to be a painter in the first place. Embrace the “happy accident” and build on it! Be free! Be wild! … and don’t care who sees you like that! Chuck McPherson will show you how.

 

The workshop will be Tuesday, June 9 through Friday, June 12 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm each day. The event will take place in the SDWS classroom located at 2825 Dewey Road, Suite 105, San Diego, CA 92106. Fees are $275 for SDWS members, and $300 for non members. There are only 25 seats available so don’t wait to register!

The Acoustic Underground Coming to Liberty Station

The Acoustic Underground is coming to Liberty Station Marketplace with a series of three outstanding guitar concerts featuring nationally known guitarists who will perform in June, July and August of 2009. The guitarists will perform in the Main Courtyard, between Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza and Panera Bread & Bakery located on Truxun Street, between Womble and Roosevelt in Point Loma.

 

The dates are:

Saturday, June 20, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. featuring Gypsy Jazz

Saturday, July 25, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. (Guitarists to be determined)

Corvette Diner Prepares to Open at Liberty Station in Early Summer

Corvette Diner, the popular, 22-year old Hillcrest restaurant is relocating to 2965 Historic Decatur Road, at Lytton Ave., just inside the gates of Liberty Station. Liberty Station’s Corvette Diner will be located at the former NTC’s Officer’s Club. The award-winning restaurant is known for its sassy waitresses decked out in poodle skirts and bouffant hairdos, the full-size Corvette hanging from the ceiling, the 50’s memorabilia, nightly DJ, and regular appearances by a magician and a balloon animal artist.

 

The Hillcrest location temporarily closed its doors on April 26, 2009 until it will reopen at Liberty Station early this summer.

San Diego Watercolor Society offers Art Summer Camp for Kids and Teens

The San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) is pleased to announce watercolor art lessons for children ages 6-17. The classes will be taught by experienced teaching artists, and held in the SDWS large, light-filled education area, located at 2825 Dewey Road #105, San Diego, CA 92106. The children will learn the basics of watercolor while expanding their own creativity, and working on various art projects throughout the one week classes. Classes are held for five days in a row, two hours each day. Registration is first come, first served (15 Students maximum each session).

 

Dates:

Grades 1-3: June 22-26, 9:30-11:30am

Grades 1-3: July 20-24, 9:30-11:30am

Grades 4-6: July 6-10, 9:30-11:30am

Grades 4-6: July 27-31, 9:30-11:30am

Teens Grades 7-12: June 22-26, 1:00-3:00pm

Teens Grades 7-12: July 27-31, 1:00-3:00pm

Spotlight Ovations is excited to announce its summer youth performing arts camps! Your children will shine in the spotlight as they learn acting techniques and circus tricks in this safe and fun summer camp. This summer’s camps include:

 

“Puttin’ on a Play”

Calling all budding young artists who have always wanted to take center stage! Students will get the chance to learn about all aspects of theatre including how to create a character, stage directions, acting technique and more. Campers will perform “The Velveteen Rabbit” on the last day of camp. This camp will be Aug. 3-7 from 9am-3pm each day for children ages 6-13. The cost is $110, and will be at Liberty Station’s A Reason To Survive, located at: 2820 Roosevelt Rd., San Diego, CA 92106.

 

“Cirque de La Kidz”

A high energy circus arts program that will encourage you to use your strength, athletic endurance, and creativity as you explore the thrills of stage combat/martial arts, acrobatics, juggling, pantomime, clowning and puppetry! The final class will premiere a magnificent Big Top Finale. Join us for a truly unique extravaganza! This summer camp is for children ages 6-13, and costs $110. The first camp will be Aug. 10-14 from 9am-3pm each day at Liberty Station’s A Reason To Survive, located at: 2820 Roosevelt Rd., San Diego, CA 92106. Two Dance Photographers to Exhibit as Part of Binational Dance Showcase at Dance Place San Diego

Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater and Minerva Tapia Dance Group and George Willis, are pleased to present two photographers of dance, Jennifer Spencer and Julio Rodriguez Ramos, in coordination with the XII Muestra Choregrafica Binacional – XII Binational Choreographic Showcase, scheduled for May 22-25 at Dance Place San Diego, at the Mandell Weiss Gallery. A wine and cheese reception, featuring dance images by photographer Jennifer Spencer and Julio Rodriguez Ramos, will kick-off the events on Friday, May 22 at 6 pm.

 The binational event, focusing on enhancing the relationships in cross-border art activities, has coordinated the two visual artist photographers in an art exhibition designed to engage dancers, choreographers and their audiences. This is an opportunity for artists of dance and photography to meet, study each other’s work, and initiate future collaborations.

About the artists: 

Julio Rodriguez Ramos (Tijuana) is a visual artist and a self-taught photographer. His images of the nature and scenery of Baja California have earned countless awards and honors and publication by both national and international presses. Julio’s work has appeared in numerous exhibitions, including installations at the Research Center of the UABC Cultural Museum in Mexicali, the Mexican Consulate in San Diego, the Mingei Museum and the Museum of Natural History. Born in the city of Obregon, Sonora, México in 1956, Julio has lived in Tijuana for the past 25 years. His commitment to the arts spans his multi-faceted career that includes producing many large-scale cultural art events. Julio is the founder and Director of the Entijuanarte Art Festival, a celebration of art with representations from the most outstanding artists around the world and México. 

Jennifer Spencer (San Diego) is a painter/photographer who has been photographing artists of San Diego for the past three years, both visual and performing. Her most recent suite of images is of the Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater dancers in rehearsal for “Cabaret”, performed in January 2009. Originally a painter for many years, Ms. Spencer has turned to photography as her new tool for expression in her exhibition, “Dancing to Abstraction”.
