San Diego Quilt Visions Launches “Off the Wall”

February 26, 2009

quilt-visions-logo

Quilt Visions, San Diego’s premiere fiber arts organization, continues to present extraordinary work of artists who are dedicated to the creation of quilts as art. In addition to presenting work in the gallery setting, Quilt Visions will be launching “Off the Wall,” a series of lectures, demonstrations and workshops tied to each exhibition that help engage visitors in art making process. Each upcoming show will have an educational component that will help promote the appreciation of quilts as art.

Next up is a solo retrospective of work by celebrated Maine artist Elizabeth Busch. As a teacher, author, sculptor, and quilt artist, Busch’s work has won numerous awards from Quilt National, Quilt Visions, and Quilts Japan, as well as being seen on Public Television, and in American Craft, and Textile Forum magazines.  Her work is featured in numerous public and private collections.  The retrospective exhibition will run from April 3- June 7, 2009, with the opening reception on Friday, April 3, from 5-7 pm.

Her style, often described as architectural, stems from 18 years of experience as an architectural designer. Her layered, often geometric, quilts are sewn paintings (acrylic on canvas) that are then hand quilted and embroidered. “This part of the process allows me to become physically reacquainted with a piece created at arm’s length on the wall, and to add another visual dimension to it,” she explained. “The subject matter for my quilts is very personal: it most often comes from something that is going on in my life at that moment. I believe it is the reason that the work connects with the viewer,” she added.

As part of the newly launched “Quilt Visions: Off the Wall,” the community will have a unique opportunity to learn from the artist during an exclusive two-day workshop and a special lecture and tour by the artist.  Participants can enjoy this rare opportunity to share an artist’s vision and hear first hand about the process and techniques to create the work.

The workshop, called “Paint and Fuse,” will be on April 1st and 2nd, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm at the Visions Art Quilt Gallery and Pat D’Arrigo ARTS Center at NTC Promenade.  The class fee is $200, and materials fee is approximately $10.  Participants will learn fabric painting and design techniques from Elizabeth Busch.  Pieces will come to life through discussion about how ideas evolve, letting go of preconceived ideas and simply letting it happen. Participants will get messy, have fun and come away with some small finished pieces, without a sewing machine. Call the Gallery (619-546-4872) to register.

The Elizabeth Busch Artist Lecture and Tour will be on Saturday, April 4, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, for a fee of $10 at the door.  Visitors will meet the artist and enjoy a guided walking tour and lecture about her work.

Busch, who received a BFA in art from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1964, has been a quilt artist since 1983. She continues to receive accolades and awards from colleagues nationwide. “In her work Elizabeth Busch pulls from the natural world and from the emotional/psychological realm to create evocative scenarios whose poetic resonance offers the viewer both a refuge and a resource. Her achievement is to make consciousness palpable – to bridge the divide between the artist’s and the viewer’s respective experiences and realities,” explained Michael James, Chair, Department of Textiles, Clothing & Design, and University of Nebraska.

San Diego Quilt Visions Gallery is located at 2825 Dewey Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92106.  For more information, call (619) 546-4872, or visit www.quiltvisions.org.

Jean Isaacs 35th Anniversary Retrospective Concert Looks Back at a Life in Dance

February 26, 2009

jean-isaacs-logo

In 1974, San Diego was a very different place than today.  Pete Wilson was Mayor, the population was a mere 700,000, there was no Gaslamp District, no trolley and the Padres and Chargers played in place called Jack Murphy Stadium. It was in this climate that Jean Isaacs began producing professional dance for the region and she has continued non-stop for thirty five years.

In honor of this artistic milestone, San Diego Dance Theater will present the Jean Isaacs 35th Anniversary Retrospective Concert at San Diego State, on May 16 at 8:00 pm and May 17 at 6:00 pm, highlighting her extraordinary body of work. “It’s not my nature to look back,” explained Isaacs, “so the experience of revisiting and reviewing nearly 100 dances that I have created has been unfamiliar. Through this process, I have actually created a full chronology for the first time.” Always an innovator and forward thinker, Isaacs was extremely productive during this time period and will select pieces that have not been programmed within recent memory.

“Working with a cast of fifteen dancers from this new generation, including nine of my company and six guest artists from around the state of California, I will pair the selected choreographies with rehearsal assistants chosen from the original casts.”

In this way, the Retrospective Concert becomes intergenerational, offering a glimpse through the lens of its most visible pioneer, while at the same time engaging a new generation of dancers in the process and artistry of that period.  The preliminary work of researching, casting, and rehearsing the selected dance has begun. Current and former Company members Liv Isaacs-Nollet, Veronica Martin Lamm, Terri Wilson and Tonnie Sammartano will restage decades old works for the millennium. The six guest dancers include noted New York choreographer Monica Bill Barnes, who will dance Isaacs’ iconic “Red Dress”, a solo she learned while a student in UCSD’s Department of Theater and Dance in 1994.  Also featured will be Erica Nordin, Lauren Slater and Elizabeth Fong Lee, part of the Isaacs Diaspora in the Bay Area.

This concert celebrates the sixth season of partnering with the SDSU Department of Theater and its Graduate Design Program under the direction of Professor Craig Wolf. Graduate students majoring in Lighting, Costume, and Scenic Design enjoy the opportunity to create in collaboration with a professional dance company.

Company photographer Manuel Rotenberg will mount a photo exhibit in the theater lobby which highlights contemporary shots of the dances alongside reclaimed shots of the original performances.

The 35th Anniversary Retrospective looks back with love at the prodigious creativity of Jean Isaacs, even as it inspires a future generation of dancers to create and excel.

Tickets for the event are $35 for VIP, which includes post-performance reception/party in the theater; $30 for general admission; $20 for seniors/military; $15 for students; and $10 for SDSU students.  The performance will be at the Don Powell Theater at San Diego State University, located at 5300 Campanile Dr., San Diego, CA 92115.  For tickets go to www.sandiegodancetheater.org or call 619.225.1803.

New Americans Museum Continues Celebrating and Exploring Diverse Immigrant Experiences With Two New Exhibitions

February 21, 2009

The New Americans Museum will present two simultaneous exhibitions that continue their commitment to celebrate and explore the contributions of America’s diverse immigration experiences.

Immigration and Caricature: Ethnic Images from the Appel Collection, examines the history of immigration and its social impact in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as viewed though the mortarpopular media of that time. This exhibition explores the role of caricature and ethnic stereotype in forming American values and attitudes about the multicultural development of the United States. It utilizes a collection of immigrant and ethnic caricatures from popular graphics dating primarily from the Civil War to World War I, a period of massive migration to the United States. To modern Americans, the contents are sometimes humorous, sometimes very disturbing. Nevertheless, the collection offers great insight into American cultural attitudes and is a remarkable resource for the study of American cultural history.

The items used in this exhibition consist of a variety of print media such as cartoons, postcards, trade cards, and prints and lithographs, all of which come from pieces donated to the Michigan State University Museum by Dr. John and Selma Appel. Dr. John Appel, Professor Emeritus of American Thought and Language at MSU and Adjunct Curator at the MSU Museum, began his collection of immigrant and ethnic images in popular media in 1965.

A Community between Two Worlds: Arab Americans in Greater Detroit, uses historical and contemporary rally_resizephotographs to tell the story of the Arab American community in Southeast Michigan, and thus other large Arab American populations in the country. According to Sally Howell, co-curator of the exhibition, “This exhibition is the first to present the culture and history of Arab Americans to the mainstream public. Most Americans are unaware of the many contributions, both large and small, which Arab Americans have made to our society over the last 100 years. A Community between Two Worlds communicates some of this rich cultural history and gives visitors a sense of who their Arab neighbors are.” Locally, nearly 30,000 San Diegans have origins from an Arabic speaking country.

Developed and curated by the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) and the Michigan State University Museum (MSUM), A Community between Two Worlds is based on an earlier photographic exhibition by ACCESS and the National Museum of American History, The Smithsonian Institution.

“Both of these exhibitions will be sure to open a dialogue about perceptions of New Americans throughout history and today.” explained Executive Director Gayle Hom.

Both exhibitions will run from February 21, 2009 to May 30, 2009.  New Americans Museum is located at 2825 Dewey Road, San Diego, CA. Museum hours are 11am-5 pm, Wednesday-Sunday, and admission is free.  For more information, call 619.255.8908 or visit www.newamericansmuseum.org.

“One of our goals as a Museum is to partner with the San Diego community to present education and outreach events that add exciting new dimension to each exhibition,” explained Executive Director Gayle Hom. “We are thrilled that the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego and the Jewish Studies Program at San Diego State University are providing this unique opportunity to hear this internationally renowned musician.”

Yale Strom is one of the world’s foremost artists of klezmer music and history. His field research in Europe has led to six award-winning documentary films and several books. Strom’s musical compositions have been heard on NPR and performed around the world.  With his klezmer band, Hot Pstromi and his wife, vocalist, Elizabeth Schwartz, he has created twelve CD’s.

From Haven to Home, an exhibition referencing the Library of Congress collections, presents a fascinating opportunity to trace the American Jewish journey from persecution to participation, from the original 23 refugees who landed in 1654 to today’s extraordinary and diverse Jewish community.

The exhibition, presented at the New Americans Museum Annex, was created by the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), located at the Center for Jewish History in New York and on the campus of Hebrew College in Newton, MA. It is brought to San Diego by the AJHS in partnership with the New Americans Museum, with assistance from the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture.

From Haven to Home: 350 Years of Jewish Life in America is being presented in a recently renovated and nationally recognized historic building at NTC Landing, the New American’s Museum Annex, located at 2863 Historic Decatur Road, San Diego, CA. The 6,000 ft building features exposed brick, two stories of natural light and plenty of free parking. The exhibition is also made possible thanks to the support and partnership of Bank of America, McMillin Commercial, United Jewish Federation of San Diego County, the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego, the NTC Foundation and the Sempra Energy Foundation.  The exhibition will run through March 1, 2009.  Museum hours are 11am-5 pm, Wednesday-Sunday, and admission is free.  For more information, call 619.255.8908 or visit www.newamericansmuseum.org.
