“Let’s Duet” By Malashock Dance Dazzles The Eye And The Ear

November 12, 2008

malashock

Let’s Duet by Malashock Dance on Nov. 21 and 22 at 8:00 pm at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre, 4126 Executive Drive  in La Jolla, is a thrilling evening of dances by Emmy-winning choreographer John Malashock, working in his favorite dance form – duets. For tickets, costing $20, $25 and $30, call the theater’s box office at 858-362-1348, or check out Malashock’s website at www.malashockdance.org.

Let’s Duet explores relationships and emotions of every kind:  quirky, loving, playful and tumultuous. Especially stirring is the premiere of a lovely duet for two women titled Flight of Longing; while Silver and Gold, introduced by Malashock in 2007, illustrates a more dysfunctional partnership.

Danced to music ranging from classical to pop, Let’s Duet encompasses works by icons such as New Music guru Philip Glass, opera composer Georges Bizet (whose The Pearl Fishers has been choreographed by Malashock throughout the U.S. and in Canada); Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (from the soundtrack of Malashock’s Emmy-winning Love and Murder), and minimalist Polish composer Henryk Gorcki.

A driving and daring double duet, Spinning Away is set to a catchy 80’s tune by Brian Eno and John Cale; while a flash from the videogame past Un-Nintendo-ed Outcome plays out against a Nintendo sound file.

On Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., the company will also perform an hour-long Let’s Duet program at the new Kassebaum Theater at Mater Dei, 1615 Mater Dei Drive, Chula Vista as part of the San Diego’s Performing Arts series, online at www.sandiegoperformingarts.org.

“Between Cultures” at New Americans Museum Captures The Essence Of The Immigrant Legacy

November 12, 2008

The New Americans Museum at Liberty Station ends its inaugural year with the exhibition Between Cultures: Children of Immigrants in America.  This collection of Chicago photography by Gina Grillo captures family experiences as they arrive in Chicago as new Americans and chronicles their integration into urban life – in new neighborhoods, with family, at cultural celebrations, citizenship ceremonies and many other everyday scenes.  Opening on November 22, this exhibition has been featured at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, the Children’s Immigration Museum – Chicago, and The Field Museum – Chicago.

Grillo’s personal commitment to exploring immigrant life in the United States turned into a creative odyssey. Since 1996 the photographer has documented the faces and captured the souls of the young people whose lives straddle two cultures. Grillo began by shooting photographs outside the lines of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Later, she photographed citizenship swearing in ceremonies, explored immigrant neighborhoods and ultimately was invited by the INS to photograph new immigrant families arriving at O’Hare. This opportunity led Grillo to develop relationships with individuals, enriching not only her work, but also her understanding of her own heritage. Grillo explains, “I grew up with a longing for my Italian heritage, to know my grandparents who had come to America long before I was born.  Their immigrant stories were told to me the way one receives a prayer, and part of my history was made in their repeating.”

“The New Americans Museum opened earlier this year to celebrate America’s past and promise by providing inspiring educational and cultural programs that honor our diverse immigrant experiences,” explained Executive Director Gayle Hom. “Grillo’s extraordinary exhibition provides an opportunity to help all of us understand and value our roots and ancestry. Newcomers, as well as many San Diegans, will relate to the challenges and the possibilities that the children in these images face as they begin life in a completely new and foreign home.”

Between Cultures: Children of Immigrants in America runs from November 22, 2008 through February 15, 2009 at The New Americans Museum at Liberty Station located at 2825 Dewey Road, Suite 102, San Diego 92106.   The museum is open from 11am – 5pm Wednesday-Sunday.  There is no charge for admission.
