In 2000, High Tech High school opened its doors as a single charter school, the genesis of a coalition of San Diego business leaders and educators. Now, it’s a nonprofit network with a growing number of charter schools around the county.High Tech High works to boost student involvement and academic achievement through project-based learning and an emphasis on technology.
The public charter school offers courses in the telecommunications, biotech, computer software, biomedical and electronics manufacturing fields. The school pushes students to complete at least one internship – though many finish two – before graduating from high school. Discussions and debates are encouraged.
