Living on Easy Street…

December 13, 2007

Liberty Station was recently named one of the “Best Neighborhoods to Retire” by Money Magazine.  According to the Money experts, Liberty Station, “…feels like a small town with wide streets and palm-tree-lined plazas, and yet a 2.5-mile bike ride or a $7 water-taxi fare are all that separate it from downtown.”

Liberty Station Continues To Bloom With Accolades!

December 11, 2007

The Corky McMillin Companies was recognized with an orchid award for the design and construction of the beautiful promenades at Liberty Station in the category of “Excellence in Urban Design”.  The NTC Promenade was also acknowledged for their use of the spaces for festivals and events which make them come alive with activity.  Dennis Otsuiji, principal at ONA landscape architects was the primary designer with input from architect Mark Steele of MW Steele Group and landscape architect Andy Spurlock of Spurlock Poirer.  Their challenge was to transform the old “grinders”-the military term for drill field where recruits marched and performed drills, into a special urban space for civilian use. Orchids & Onions, a premier architectural awards program, highlighted, “The developers have created a lush oasis ringed with flowering plants and highlighted with water features.”

The awards ceremony was held on Friday, November 30th at the North Park Theatre.  Orchids & Onions is a program of the San Diego Architectural Foundation (SDAF), a non-profit public membership organization.  The panel of judges consisted of local architects, professors and artists.
